When I Use artificial tanner do I have to exfoliate every time I apply?

I bought the loreal gel tanner stuff and It says to exfoliate, do i do that every time or just the first time, cuz if I do it every time doesnt it just take what i did before off?When I Use artificial tanner do I have to exfoliate every time I apply?
