Why is it important to exfoliate before self tan?

Ok i've been using tanning lotion and it's been working pretty well.. I use it at night let it dry then sleep, I then take a shower int he morning and go to school.

I've been noticing in the light that its more pale ins ome areas.. AND i have orange crap in my finger nails :(! and like a long streak of orange on some of my ringers and on the inside. Does exfoliating with a loofa sponge help? What does it do exactly, and any other tips you can give me?Why is it important to exfoliate before self tan?
Exfoliating your skin gives it a smooth surface. Our skin is constantly shedding and it does not do this equally. You can use a loofa or get a body scrub and use it with a wash cloth. The key is to get all the dead skin off and to make it even.

Every self-tanner comes with a warning to WASH your hands. The dye from the self-tanner colors everything it touches...this includes your hands, fingers and nails. After you use the self-tanner IMMEDIATELY wash your hands with warm water and soap.

Also with self-tanners, be careful of your hairline and eyebrows (these can change color as well).

The key is to apply the self-tanner evenly to get the best results.

When I use self-tanners I actually use those disposable gloves. It's a little awkward, but at least I know that I'm going to get orange fingers!!!Why is it important to exfoliate before self tan?
It probably gives a more porous surface for the ';orange'; to seep into and stain.
exfoliating gets rid of all the dead skin that causes uneven tanning :] when it's all smooth the tanning lotion will go on nice %26amp; even!
Self tanners are awful, end of story

Most people that use them look like an Oompa Loompa (orange). Or its streaky, pale in some spots, dark in some spots, and noticably fake.

Either get a real tan, or rock the pale, porcelain, flawless skin look.

I learned the hard way, I used them for like a year and then realized I looked stupid. :)
exfoliating your skin is just getting all the dead dry skin off....it's good to do before slef tanning because it makes your skin all smooth and soft so that when you put the tanner on it will be even. if you don't exfoliate first, then you are likely to have some spots that are darker, especially areas like knees and elbows...also, you should wash your hands when you are done
if you are trying to fix it- cut a lemon in half and rub it on the orangy spots. it really does help.

next time exfoliate before you put it on- it helps get rid of your dead skin cells. if you don't, then all the dead skin spots will absorb more color- like your knees, heels, and elbows do too.
